Artist blacksmithing by Jim Joyce

Jim Joyce is well known for his elegant metal work. You have probably seen his booth at Art In the Redwoods for the past several years. He will be guest-teaching artist blacksmithing to the Alamo Middle School disctrict in late winter/early spring. For the second year, he will be teaching a week long class April 9-13, 2007 for Mendocino High School students

Mendocino Art Center asked him to teach a week-long class in June on the concept of "artist blacksmithing to personalize your home." We hope he takes them up on it!

To get more info on his schedule in the coming months, check out his web site at blacksmithbiz.com or email him at

Oil Classes by Connie Matz

Painting in Oils taught by Connie Matz on Mondays and Tuesdays 9 am -12 pm upstairs at The Gualala Arts CenterLibrary.

This class is open to all levels weather you are just a beginner or advanced. You can come either day or both days. The best part is that you come when you can. Here where our coast community is coming and going, this is an ideal class.

Connie says: Some of you might even just need a few classes to get start again, or maybe a critique. I teach Drawing, composition, oil, and acrylic. If you would like to visit the class you are always welcome. Come and open the door to your creative side and see a world you have never seen before. This is a statement I have heard from so many of my students:\u201e I am seeing things I have never seen before.\u2030 Come and join us and have a great year. Drop by and see what the class is doing.

  • Drop in class.
  • Pay as you come. $20 per class
  • Beginner to Advanced.
  • Year Around.

Plein Air Group

You are invited to draw and paint with the Plein Aire Group. The idea is that most of us need a jump start in art on Monday morning; not just talking about it but actually doing it. We patterned it after the local hiking groups, publishing a schedule for three months at a time and anyone who wants to participate just shows up. No money is involved.
We meet at 10am Monday mornings. If carpooling seems like a good idea, people who want to carpool meet at 9:45 at a carpool spot:
  • The North carpool spot is Anchor Bay's south end parking lot.
  • The South carpool spot is the far lot at Sea Ranch Lodge.
SCHEDULE:

  • February 19: Gualala River - go east on Annapolis Road to the second bridge over the Gualala River and park in the dirt lot on the left. Then we will walk down the gravel road to the river for nice forest and river views.
  • February 26: The Goblins - park in the dirt lot with the call box on the east side of the road at about Sonoma mile marker 40.7. This is between Stump Beach on the north and Gerstle Cove on the south. Then we'll walk down a dirt trail to the Goblin rocks -- less than half a mile. Ron Bolander recommends it.
  • March 5: Stornetta Land Conservancy -- take Lighthouse Road west from Highway 1 at mile market 17.00; drive until you hit the cliffs above the ocean. On the left is a place to park. Views south to interesting rock formations and north to the lighthouse.
  • March 12: Robinson Bluff, view of Castle Rocks - take Hwy1 north through Gualala and turn left on Pacific. Go straight where it becomes Coral Court (1 block) and park down at the dead end. Then we'll walk out the road and path to the bluffs with a beautiful view of Castle Rocks.
  • March 19: Gualala River - take Gualala Road past the Art Center to the Campground and park in the wide place opposite the campground. Good rocks, ferns and redwoods.
  • March 26: River Overlook - instead of turning west into the Gualala Point park, take the road east toward the campground but just go to the ranger station at the top of the hill (street address 42401) and you will see an excellent river overlook with and interesting view of mill bend, the town of Gualala and the coast up to the fish rocks.
  • April 2: Manchester Dunes - take Hwy1 to Stoneboro Road, mile market 19.64, turn left and take it to the dead end. Then we'll walk out on the dunes and catch the spring flowers on the dunes.
  • April 9: Sea Ranch Chapel - Sonoma Hwy 1 mile marker 55.56. Go east to the Chapel -- it is just north of the fire station.
  • April 16: Thompson Heather Gardens -- take Hwy1 to Stoneboro Road, mile market 19.64, turn left and left again. We'll need to get permission before this is finalized.
  • April 23: Arena Cove, a well marked road one mile west of Hwy1 in Point Arena. Good views of cove, cliffs and boats.
  • April 30: Redwood Forest - Julie Verran is setting up this new site - we'll send details a week or so before.
